Interesting argument. Twin births are rare enough, too, that I doubt they'd be a burden on the EI system.

Hey, maybe if you have triplets you can get another year tacked on for both to share.
Sextuplets will get you 3 years off each!! Wahoo! Bring on the fertility treatments!

I'm not sure we want the type of person that would look at this as an oportunity multiplying that quickly. :|

What a bunch of bloody nonsense! They chose to have the kids, now they can look after them. The kids will sleep most of the day. 'Daddy' can bathe and feed one before he goes to work. Mom bathes and feeds the other. Feeding times are staggered during the day. Yes. The kids can be 'trained' (for lack of a better word)to this routine. Same routine in the evening. As well, friends and family will help out.

Excepting implantation, nobody "chooses" twins. Some countries already offer twice what Canada does for parental benefits, and that's for one kid. The kids certainly didn't have any say in whether there were one or two of them, why should they have their resources divided?

They don't have family in Ottawa, and their friends probably work all day.

That said... you should be "used to" taking care of 2 kids in 17 weeks both being off. She should stop being so scared, and just do it.

(God, there is NO way I would want hubby around for over 4 months, day after day! Then you REALLY have nothing else to talk about than your kids!)

The kids are the parents responsibility. They will do quite nicely provided the parents 'extend themselves. 'Daddy' will actually have to become a very active parent!

Talking about many countries... The Netherlands offer daddy 2 days of paid leave (the date of birth and the next, to register), and mommy 16 weeks. 6 weeks before due date, and 10 after. After that, it is either back to work, or unpaid leave, which might (will...) cost you your job.

Are you kidding?. Why should they get twice the time? Do kids grow years in difference?. Are the two kids at different houses? Give me a break, by this logic, the first baby should get taken care of for 35 weeks, then move to the next for the next 35 weeks. Right? cause thats why there complaing cause they couldnt possibly take care of two kids at the same time my god no, whatever with they do, hire a nanny?, housewife (which have newley been granted coverage), many opther options are around. stop being lazy and trying to get free money. if its not about the money then just taker time off without pay, nah who would want to do that eh? what the hell else do you expect?. I shouldnt be paying to take care of your kids so your ass can be off work.

Why shouldn't they? If they had the kids two years apart, they'd get twice the time, just in two different chunks. Why shouldn't they get it all at once with the twins?

Why should ANYONE get 'paid time off' for having kids??? It was their choice. Live within your means. Deal with it!

Well, in one way to look ait it, nobody really does get "paid time off." When you have a kid, you file for parental benefis with EI, which you've been paying into, and which you'll again pay into when you go back to work.

Thats easy, the kids that are born two years apart go through different needs at two different times, twins dont. Example: twins will both go through the first six months together, mom can change both diapers at the same time, in two year difference she cannot and everything must be repeated again, twins its all done a the same time so no need for double the time
